Once again, Melbourne was ranked Australia’s best performing university by Subject. Nationwide, it stood first in 12 of the 30 disciplines.

Also it ranks the second best faculty in the world, next to the University of London’s Institute of Education.

Also it crowns the nation’s most comprehensive university award in 29 of the 30 disciplines.

The University ranks top in eight out of 16 subject areas related to technology, mathematics, and science. On the contrary, the Australian National University dominated in the arts and humanities, ranking first nationally in five of the six subject areas. This dominance of Melbourne and ANU, along with University of New South Wales, University of Queensland, Monash, and Sydney left little room for other institutions that excel in their fields.

However these rankings point the University higher authorities to doubts as to the rigor of the methodology. Some comments that the particular emphasis to reputation surveys would lead to the conception that the more internationalized an institution was the likelier its name would be recognized.

The only University that has achieved two top positions is Macquarie University. It stood top in earth and marine sciences and in Philosophy.

Below is the list of top five Universities nationwide by subject wise:

  • University of Western Australia and Curtin (earth and marine sciences)
  • La Trobe (history);
  • Deakin (education);
  • Adelaide (agriculture and forestry);
  • Wollongong (materials science)
  • Queensland University of Technology (communication and media studies).
